Detailed Rules

Competitive Rules “Spike In Your Face”

PLAYERS This division requires at least 1 woman and at most 3 men per team. Teams must field exactly 4 players at all times, so you may NOT have 2 guys and 1 girl (exceptions will be made at the sole discretion of the tournament director for injuries or other extenuating circumstances). Teams may have more than 4 players and substitutes in “normal rotating order” or “player for player”. Players may be replaced by other players for medical or extenuating circumstances if and only if given permission by the tournament director. Replacement players will NOT be allowed after lunch in the single elimination tournament.

SERVING A net serve that goes over is a POINT for the serving team if not returned.

RECEIVING The receiving team must “pass” the serve, so setting the serve is illegal. A “hard driven” ball may be passed with two hands above the shoulders (no double hit).

SETTING Call your own setting mistakes which include lifts and double hits. It is unsportsmanlike, and therefore illegal, to intentionally set a ball over the net unless the players shoulders are square to the net. If a “clean” set unintentionally goes over the net, it is legal, but you should feel really bad about it.

HITTING Everyone can hit. There is no back row restriction.

BLOCKING Anyone can block. There is no back row restriction. Players may not leave the ground to block the serve.

ROTATING Players must rotate serve. Players are not required to rotate position. Players can maintain the same position without rotating as long as everyone serves in normal order.

SCORING Matches consist of 1 game to 21 points using rally scoring. In the event of a tie, a team must win by two. The match is capped at 23 points regardless of the point differential. The final score can be 22-20 or 23-22.

SPORTSMANSHIP Sportsmanship is the key to having a fun day. Call your own mistakes and your teammates’ mistakes. Do NOT call your opponents presumed mistakes. Assume everyone is calling it tight. If it’s a bad set, call it. It you touch the net, call it. If you touch the ball, call it. If the ball hits the line, call it. Karma is a bitch.

CHAMPIONSHIP A modified double elimination tournament will be played in the morning to ensure every team gets 3 scheduled games (which may include a bye). The top teams will play in a modified single elimination tournament and are guaranteed two scheduled matches (which may include a bye). The bottom teams will play in a similar single elimination tournament and are guaranteed two scheduled matches, but are not eligible to win the championship. To win the championship you must go undefeated in the top seeds’ single elimination tournament.

Social Rules “Bump & Grind”

PLAYERS This division requires at least 2 women and at most 2 men per team. Teams must field exactly 4 players at all times, so you may NOT have 2 guys and 1 girl (exceptions will be made at the sole discretion of the tournament director for injuries or other extenuating circumstances). Teams are encouraged to have more than 4 players and substitutes in “normal rotating order”. Rotate in to serve and rotate out just before your serve. Players may be replaced by other players for medical or extenuating circumstances if and only if given permission by the tournament director. Replacement players will NOT be allowed after lunch in the single elimination tournament, unless you have a really good reason or pay off the tournament director.

SERVING A net serve that goes over is a DO OVER … say what?!?!? Yep, try it out. Just like in tennis, if the serve hits the net and goes in, you get a second serve … yes you can double fault, which would result in a SIDEOUT.

RECEIVING The receiving team can “pass” the serve or a “hard driven” ball in any way, shape, or form necessary.

SETTING Call your own setting mistakes when they are really bad.

Players may not block the serve. Men blocking women is not encouraged unless she is really good … sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do … don’t let her tool you.

ROTATING Players must rotate position and serve in normal order. Substitutes may sub in to serve and out before serving.

Call your own mistakes and your teammates’ mistakes if they are really bad. No need to call your opponents minor mistakes. If you know you have a bad set or touch the net and it SIGNIFICANTLY affects the outcome of the point, call it, otherwise, play on!
